Golf Overview
The goal of Golf is to put the golf ball into the hole in the green, in the least number of strokes as possible. Holes are anywhere from 100 yards long to 500 yards.
Your score is the number of shots you take on a whole. The score you aim for is called par, and it is 3 on the short holes, 4 on the medium ones, and 5 for the long ones. Courses are usually Par 72, or you should aim to shoot 72 shots that round.
The ball may only be struck by a club. Drivers or woods are used for long shots or off the tee. They shoot the farthest with the lowest trajectory. Irons are used out of the rough or on the fairway, and they are used to put the ball on the green. The putter is used to hit the ball a short distance into the hole.
A fairway is where you are supposed to aim. It has short grass. The green has the shortest grass, and on the green lays the hole. There are various hazards to punish bad shots.
The most common is the rough, which is long grass surrounding the fairway. It is harder to hit out of the rough, and less accurate and distant shots are hit out of it. There are bunkers, sand pits often surrounding the green.
A special club called the Sand Wedge must be used to hit out of the sand bunkers. Finally there are water hazards. If you hit your ball into one of these rivers or ponds, you must take a penalty stroke.
